Obverse description The obverse of this host coin depicts the seated figure of Liberty facing left, draped and enthroned upon a rock, holding a liberty pole surmounted by a Phrygian cap in her right hand and resting her left hand upon a shield adorned with horizontal stripes. Thirteen six-pointed stars surround the central device in an arc along the periphery. The date 1855 appears in the lower exergue, flanked by decorative arrow points. A Cuban key countermark, applied by Spanish colonial authorities between 1872 and 1877, is struck upon the obverse field to validate the coin for circulation in Cuba.
