Dendermonde was occupied and partially burned by German forces in August 1914 — one of the more brutal early reprisals of the war, which destroyed a significant portion of the town center. By 1918, with Belgian franc coinage hoarded or requisitioned, municipalities across the occupied country were issuing their own small-denomination paper to keep local commerce moving. This note is one of those emergency pieces, printed locally by Du Cauu-Beeckman rather than any national authority.
Local production under occupation meant limited press quality and short survival rates. The Kamyn engraving credit is notably specific for a municipal emergency issue of this kind.
