| Beschrijving voorzijde | The Haitian coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a palm tree flanked by two symmetrically arranged trophy groupings of cannons, cannonballs, flags, and anchors, rendered in bold relief. A Phrygian cap surmounts the palm tree as a symbol of liberty. The circular legend REPUBLIQUE D'HAYTI arcs around the periphery, interrupted at the base by the denomination inscription *25*C*, separated by small star ornaments. The design is executed in a robust, somewhat primitive engraving style characteristic of early Haitian republican coinage. |

Haiti's Western Republic coinage of 1818 was struck under Alexandre Pétion, who had consolidated control of the southern and western portions of the island after the violent split with Henri Christophe's northern kingdom. Pétion died in March of that year, leaving Jean-Pierre Boyer to inherit both the western republic and, within months, Christophe's collapsing north — reunifying the country under a single government for the first time since the revolution.
KM#16 is among the earlier silver issues of the young republic, produced at a moment when Haiti's monetary infrastructure was still improvised and inconsistent. Die alignment and planchet quality vary considerably across surviving examples.
