The Ajuntament de Lleida commissioned this replica through the FNMT-RCM in Madrid as part of a wave of commemorative reproductions of Spanish Civil War–era local emergency currency — the so-called "moneda local" or "paper de guerra" issued by Catalan municipalities when small change effectively ceased to exist after 1936. The originals were produced under desperate conditions; this version was produced under none, which is precisely what makes the FNMT watermark an odd but telling detail — applied to a reproduction to distinguish it from the thing it imitates.
