Noalejo is a small municipality in the Sierra Mágina comarca of Jaén province, Andalusia. This 25 céntimos note belongs to the wave of locally issued emergency fractional currency — conocida as "billetes de necesidad" — that flooded rural Spain during the Civil War after the hoarding of coins and the collapse of reliable small-denomination supply made everyday commerce nearly impossible. Hundreds of municipalities issued their own scrip from 1936 onward, most with only a council rubber stamp for authentication.

The official stamp is the only security element preventing counterfeiting by a neighboring village.
