| Additional information |
Westarctica is a micronation founded in 2001 by Travis McHenry, who exploited a territorial gap in the Antarctic Treaty System to claim Marie Byrd Land — one of the largest unclaimed territories on Earth at the time. The X# reference places this squarely in the Unusual World Coins catalog, the standard home for micronational and fantasy issues. Grant Island is a real geographic feature off the Hobbs Coast of Antarctica, within the claimed territory.
These were struck as novelty issues rather than circulating coinage, with no meaningful monetary infrastructure behind them.
