Issued to mark the 25th wedding anniversary of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, this piece was struck in the same year the Cayman Islands Currency Board issued its very first coinage series — the territory had only established its own currency in 1972, replacing the Jamaican dollar following the islands' separation from Jamaica in 1962 and subsequent development as a distinct Crown dependency. The Silver Wedding anniversary provided a politically convenient occasion to anchor the new currency's prestige issues from the outset.
The .925 fineness and substantial weight place it firmly in the collector-bullion category rather than anything intended for circulation.
