This piece was issued as part of Spain's ECU commemorative program, which ran through the 1990s and honored European cultural figures despite the ECU itself never circulating as physical currency — it existed solely as a unit of account. Mompou, the Barcelona-born composer who spent decades in Paris before returning to Catalonia, was among the more unexpected honorees in the series, known to specialists more for his piano miniatures than for any broad international fame.
The .999 fineness is atypical for Spanish commemoratives of the period, most of which used .925.
