The Institut d'Émission de l'Afrique Occidentale Française et du Togo was itself a transitional institution — created in 1955 to manage currency across French West Africa and Togo as the colonial framework began its slow, politically contested unraveling. This 1956 issue arrived just two years before the loi-cadre Defferre granted significant autonomy to the territories, and only four years before most of them achieved full independence. Coins bearing this issuer's name had an exceptionally short window of legitimacy.
