Turkey's aluminum coinage of the mid-1980s was a direct consequence of the 1980 military coup and the economic liberalization program imposed under General Kenan Evren's junta, which handed monetary policy to the IMF and World Bank. Chronic inflation — running above 30–40% annually through much of the decade — meant the 25 Lira was effectively worthless before the series even concluded. The Etial 30 alloy, a Soviet-developed aluminum specification, was chosen purely for its negligible raw material cost.
