Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of Saint Helena's designation as a Crown Colony in 1823 — a status change that followed directly from Napoleon Bonaparte's death on the island two years earlier, which removed the East India Company's strategic rationale for administering it privately. The Colonial Office assumed control almost immediately after the Emperor died, and London has governed the island directly ever since.
