Ansbach's 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the second wave of German municipal emergency currency — the so-called "Serienscheine" phase, when towns discovered that collectors, not merchants, were the real market. Willy Flach's involvement as designer points to a locally commissioned piece rather than a generic fill-in job from a commercial printer, which was common enough that most Franconian Notgeld is artistically interchangeable.
The signatory, Dr. W. Burkholder, held the title of "Rechtsk. 1. Bürgermeister" — a legally qualified first mayor, a distinction that mattered in Bavarian municipal governance at the time. His signature gave the note its formal validity under the city council's authority.
