The KM#12a designation distinguishes this piece from the original 1949 aluminum-bronze 25 Pruta — the nickel clad steel composition was adopted as Israel sourced cheaper, more durable materials for its small-denomination coinage in the early 1950s. The pruta itself was a short-lived unit; rampant inflation rendered the entire pruta series obsolete by 1960, when the agorot replaced them at a ratio of 1000 pruta to 1 new Israeli pound.
