Bulgaria emerged from the First World War on the losing side, saddled with reparations obligations under the Treaty of Neuilly (1919) and a currency that had depreciated severely through wartime inflation. The 2500 Leva denomination was enormous by prewar standards — a symptom of that collapse rather than a reflection of genuine monetary stability.
P#26C is a signature or serial variety within the broader 1919 issue. The Bulgarian National Bank was printing in high denominations at a moment when the government had virtually no fiscal credibility left to borrow against.
