Officers' Mess chits from Australian military units occupy a peculiar corner of notaphily — not quite scrip, not quite vouchers, but functioning as internal currency within a closed institutional economy. The Adelaide University Regiment's mess operated on this basis for the better part of two decades, with the yellow paper chits serving drink and meal tallies that would be settled against officers' accounts at the end of each month.
The long dating range suggests successive printings rather than a single issue — wear and attrition in an active mess would have demanded replenishment. Survival rate is predictably low; these were working instruments, not saved.
