Georgia's kuponi was never meant to be a permanent currency — it was a transitional instrument introduced in 1993 after the Soviet ruble zone collapsed, pending the launch of the lari. By 1994, hyperinflation had already gutted the lower denominations into irrelevance, forcing the rapid issue of notes in the tens of thousands. The 30,000 kuponi sits near the top of that inflationary cascade.
The lari replaced the kuponi in 1995 at a rate of one million to one.
