Additional information

Issued by the Republican government during the Spanish Civil War, these cardboard emergency pieces were produced in Madrid while the city was under siege by Nationalist forces. The metal shortages driving their creation were absolute — copper and nickel had been redirected entirely to the war effort, leaving municipal authorities to improvise with pressed cardboard stock. They circulated alongside similarly improvised issues from dozens of other Republican municipalities, each town essentially printing its own substitute currency as central supply lines collapsed.
