300 Gulden

De Javasche Bank's 300 Gulden denomination was always an outlier — an unusually high face value for a colonial circulation note, almost certainly intended for large commercial transactions and interbank settlements rather than retail trade in the Dutch East Indies. Notes of this series rarely left the vaults of counting houses, which paradoxically contributed to survival in relatively intact condition.

Enschedé in Haarlem had produced banknotes since the early nineteenth century and held the De Javasche Bank contract through multiple series. The P#58 issue falls late in a period of significant Dutch colonial banking expansion, just before the pressures of the early twentieth century forced structural reforms on the bank's note issuance.
