Fiorucci, the Milan-based salumeria turned fashion brand, issued these 300 Lire notes as promotional tokens during the 1970s — a period when actual small-denomination coinage was in chronic short supply across Italy. The coin shortage was severe enough that municipalities, transit authorities, shops, and even private companies issued their own fiduciary substitutes, a phenomenon the Italians called "moneta fiduciaria." Fiorucci's version doubled as advertising.
Having the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato — the official state printer and mint — produce what amounted to a commercial novelty is the genuinely odd detail here. The same facility that printed official Banca d'Italia notes ran this job.
