Carlos II died in November 1700, meaning any 4 Escudos struck at Mexico City dated 1701 in his name were produced posthumously — minted under Felipe V but still carrying the old king's titles and assay marks while the colonial bureaucracy absorbed news of the succession. This lag was routine in New Spain, where royal deaths traveled slowly and die preparation ran well ahead of political reality.
The cob-style macuquina fabric of this issue means individual specimens vary wildly in shape and strike completeness — a known characteristic of hand-hammered planchets cut from rolled gold bar, not a flaw in any specific die.
