Argus was one of several Royal Navy vessels authorized to issue fractional paper currency for internal use — small-denomination notes that allowed officers and crew to conduct transactions aboard ship without relying on coin, which was both scarce and prone to disappearing over the side. These ship's notes circulated exclusively within the vessel's economy and had no validity ashore.
