Bolivia's early republican coinage was struck at the Potosí mint, the same facility that had produced Spanish colonial silver for nearly three centuries. The 1830 date places this coin in the immediate aftermath of independence, when the new republic was still resolving what its monetary system would look like — and the .667 fineness reflects a deliberate step down from colonial standards, partly to stretch silver reserves and partly to fund a state with almost no stable revenue base.
KM#96a distinguishes this from the slightly later type, a distinction that turns on assayer initial combinations at Potosí.
