| 正面描述 | A real Spanish Republic postage stamp of 40 centimos denomination is affixed to the cardboard disc, serving as the obverse design. The stamp depicts the allegorical effigy of the Spanish Republic as a female bust in left profile, rendered in red on a cream field in fine engraved style. The denomination '40 CTS' appears at upper right, with the word 'CORREOS' running vertically along the right margin. The legend 'REPUBLICA ESPAÑOLA' is inscribed along the lower border of the stamp, whose perforated edges are visible within the circular cardboard surround. |

Marchena, a small agricultural town in Seville province, issued emergency cardboard fractional currency during the early months of the Civil War when Republican-held areas faced acute shortages of metallic coinage — silver and copper had vanished into hoarding and wartime requisition almost simultaneously. Municipal ayuntamientos across Andalusia filled the gap with whatever materials were at hand. Cardboard was the unsentimental answer.
Survival rates for these issues are low. The material degrades, and most circulated pieces were simply discarded once the monetary emergency passed.
