Afghanistan's first proper central bank, Da Afghanistan Bank, was not established until 1939, and the notes issued in the years immediately following were part of an effort to consolidate a fragmented monetary system that had previously relied heavily on Indian rupees and informal exchange. Bradbury Wilkinson, the Surrey-based security printer, handled Afghanistan's note production through much of this period — the same firm responsible for issues from dozens of newly consolidating states across Asia and the Middle East.
The P#29 series is relatively scarce in high grades due to the harsh Central Asian climate and the predominantly cash-based rural economy, which wore notes down quickly.
