| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Rwanda is depicted centrally, featuring a shield supported by two crossed traditional weapons and flanked by coffee and sorghum branches, surmounted by a sun and knot symbol. A scroll beneath the shield bears the national motto in Kinyarwanda. The denomination numeral '5' appears in the lower field. The Kinyarwanda legends 'AMAFARANGA ATANU' are inscribed along the left and right outer margins respectively, reading vertically. The legend 'REPUBLIKA Y'U RWANDA' curves along the upper interior of the design. |

Rwanda's 2009 coinage program was part of a broader post-genocide economic reconstruction effort, with the Banque Nationale du Rwanda modernizing the circulating series as the country rebuilt financial infrastructure under the RPF government. Brass-plated steel replaced solid brass in small denominations during this period as a straightforward cost-reduction measure.
