The copper-clad steel composition dates to a 1998 retooling of Oman's smaller circulating denominations, replacing the earlier bronze planchets as part of a cost-reduction programme common across Gulf states during the prolonged low oil-price environment of the late 1990s. The magnetic planchet change is the primary distinction separating KM#150 from its predecessor.
