| 裏面の説明 | Central device features a heraldic American bald eagle displayed with wings spread, perched atop a striped shield bearing a canton of stars, a design engraved by Charles E. Barber adapted from the arms of the United States. The circumferential legend 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' encircles the field, reading from lower left to upper right. The date '1918' appears in the lower exergual area flanked by two small dots, with a small mintmark 'S' positioned just below the shield. The entire design is framed by a continuous beaded border. |

The 1918 "mule" combines the obverse die of the Buffalo nickel with the reverse die of the Philippines 5 centavos, two denominations that shared near-identical specifications. The error almost certainly originated at the Philadelphia Mint, which was simultaneously producing both series, and it went undetected long enough that a small number reached circulation. Fewer than a dozen confirmed examples are known.
