Saint-Germain-en-Laye issued local aluminum necessity pieces during the First World War, when the hoarding of bronze and copper coinage created acute small-change shortages across France. Hundreds of French communes, chambers of commerce, and local merchants' associations produced their own token currency between roughly 1914 and 1922 to fill the gap left by the disappearance of state-issued petites monnaies from everyday circulation.
