Peru's 1985 coinage came at the peak of a catastrophic inflation crisis that would ultimately force the replacement of the sol with the inti that same year. This 5 céntimos piece belongs to the transitional inti series introduced under the government of Fernando Belaúnde Terry, with the inti set at 1,000 soles de oro. Within three years, inflation had rendered even the inti effectively worthless, and denominations at this scale were simply abandoned in circulation before the decade ended.
