Namibia's coinage dates only to 1993, when the country introduced its own currency two years after independence from South African administration. Until then, the South African rand had circulated as legal tender, and the new Namibian dollar was deliberately pegged to it at par — a peg that remains in force today. The 5-cent denomination continued without interruption through multiple design updates before the series was eventually retired in 2015, when the Reserve Bank withdrew small-denomination coins citing production costs exceeding face value.
