The numeral '5' appears above the hole in the upper field. The East Africa and Uganda Protectorates currency system was administered by the Imperial British East Africa Company's successor authorities, and the 1907 patterns were struck as the colonial administration worked to standardize coinage across the region. This particular copper-nickel pattern in the 5 cent denomination was never adopted for circulation — the approved coinage continued on a different specification path, making surviving examples products of the trial process rather than any productive mint run.
