Belize achieved independence from Britain in 1981, but these coins were struck under the transitional Government of Belize beginning in 1973, when the colony was still formally British Honduras. The silver .925 variant of this denomination was produced as a collector issue alongside the circulating cupro-nickel version — the two running concurrently through the series dates.
