The Narodna Banka Kraljevine Jugoslavije — the National Bank of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia — came into being following Alexander I's January 1929 royal dictatorship, which dissolved parliament and renamed the country from the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. This note is a direct product of that political reset: the new name required new paper.
At 5 Dinara, this was the lowest denomination in the 1929 series, intended for everyday small transactions in a country whose rural population remained deeply attached to coin. Paper of this face value circulated hard and wore quickly.
