Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations, this coin was part of a broad international program in which dozens of member states released commemorative silver pieces through 1995. Jordan's participation reflected Hussein's consistent positioning of the kingdom as a moderate, diplomatically engaged state — a posture reinforced just the previous year when Jordan signed the Wadi Araba Treaty with Israel in October 1994, ending a 46-year formal state of war.
