The UAE's shift to polymer for the 5 Dirham denomination reflects a broader regional push toward domestically produced security printing. Oumolat Security Printing LLC — a joint venture established in Abu Dhabi — was specifically created to reduce Gulf states' dependence on foreign security printers, and this note is among the earlier circulating issues to come fully out of that facility.
Polymer 5 Dirham notes from this series have shown some susceptibility to surface abrasion in high-humidity Gulf conditions, a known limitation of certain polymer substrates when ink adhesion is not optimized for the climate.
