Obverse description The upper margin bears 'DOMINION OF CANADA' above the bold bank title 'THE ROYAL BANK OF CANADA', with two male portrait vignettes in fine intaglio engraving flanking a central heraldic shield — one at the left third and one at the right third of the note. Denomination numerals '5' occupy each corner, with 'FIVE DOLLARS' in a panel at the lower centre, and a blue letterpress overprint reading 'ANTIGUA / PAYABLE AT ST. JOHN'S, ANTIGUA' is applied to this Specimen example. The date 'JAN. 2ND 1913' and place of issue 'MONTREAL' appear in the lower body of the note.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in a uniform green tone, centred on the British Royal Arms — a quartered heraldic shield supported by a crowned lion and unicorn with the motto ribbon 'DIEU ET MON DROIT' below — flanked by elaborate guilloche rosette panels each bearing the numeral '5'. 'THE ROYAL BANK OF CANADA' runs across the top, while 'FIVE' and 'FIVES' inscriptions appear along the lower border, the whole composition executed in intaglio engraving.
