The Banque Canadienne Nationale was a Quebec-based francophone institution formed in 1924 through the merger of the Banque Nationale and the Banque d'Hochelaga. By 1935, privately issued chartered bank notes in Canada were on borrowed time — the Bank of Canada had opened that same year, and the chartered banks' note-issuing privileges were systematically wound down over the following decade. This note belongs to the last generation of private Canadian bank currency.

The Canadian Bank Note Company printed for multiple chartered banks simultaneously, and plate-sharing arrangements between series were common. Worth checking whether the serial number prefix corresponds to the Montreal or Quebec City branch authorization.
