By 1976, Rhodesia's unilateral independence — declared eleven years earlier — had hardened into full international isolation, and the Reserve Bank was operating under sustained sanctions. Thomas De La Rue continued printing for Rhodesia throughout this period, a relationship that drew periodic criticism in London given the British government's official position on the regime.

The Bruce/Krogh signature combination places this note in a specific administrative window. Krogh, an economist of South African background, served as governor during one of the more turbulent phases of the bush war, when foreign currency reserves were under serious strain.
