The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority was established in 1997, taking over currency functions from the Currency Board that had operated since 1972. Cayman dollar notes are pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of CI$1 to US$1.20 — a rate that has held since 1974 and remains one of the highest-valued dollar-denominated currencies in circulation anywhere.
