The USS Missouri (BB-63) earned its place in history as the site of Japan's formal surrender on September 2, 1945, making it arguably the most significant single vessel of the twentieth century's defining conflict. Nauru's connection to that moment is direct: the island was under brutal Japanese occupation from 1942 until the surrender itself, during which roughly a third of the Nauruan population perished.
The coin is aluminium bronze — a deliberate choice for a Pacific island nation with historically tight hard currency reserves.
