Additional information

The Marshall Islands began issuing commemorative coinage in 1986 following the Compact of Free Association with the United States, which granted the republic self-governance while maintaining close financial and political ties to Washington. The Discovery theme here references the shuttle's return-to-flight mission STS-26 in September 1988 — the first launch after the Challenger disaster — making this a coin issued in genuine proximity to a charged moment rather than a retrospective cash-in.

KM#6 is among the earliest Marshall Islands issues and was struck by the U.S. Mint's contractor network rather than a domestic facility.
