Spain's 1994 ECU series was issued ahead of the European single currency debates that would culminate in the Maastricht Treaty's implementation, with each member state selecting a national figure for its contribution to the set. The ECU itself never became legal tender in Spain — these were collector issues from the outset, struck for the numismatic market rather than any circulatory purpose.
Cervantes died in 1616 owing money to his landlord.
