| 正面描述 | Central field features the colonial coat of arms of Cape Verde: a Portuguese armillary sphere overlaid with the Portuguese royal shield, flanked by decorative elements and surmounted by a mural crown with five towers. The denomination '5$00' appears in the lower field beneath the arms. The legend 'CABO·VERDE' curves along the upper periphery, with small rosette ornaments flanking the denomination at the lower left and right. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner border. |

Trial pieces from Casa da Moeda in this period were produced for internal evaluation as Portugal weighed coinage reforms under the Estado Novo regime. The 1968 date places this squarely in the final year of Salazar's effective rule — he suffered an incapacitating stroke in September of that year and was replaced by Marcelo Caetano. Whether that political disruption affected the outcome of any concurrent coinage decisions is unrecorded, but the 5 Escudos denomination in copper-nickel did proceed to regular issue.
