Simone de Oliveira, born in 1938, became one of Portugal's most enduring popular music figures — distinct from the fado tradition that dominated the country's musical identity under Estado Novo. She represented Portugal in the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest in Madrid, finishing in eighteenth place with "Desfolhada Portuguesa," a result that did little to dent her domestic standing. The INCM has issued a growing series of commemoratives honoring Portuguese cultural figures, and this silver piece falls within that program.
