Reverse description Central armorial shield of the Congo Free State, quartered and surmounted by a royal crown, supported on either side by rampant lions facing inward toward the escutcheon. The denomination 5 FRANCS appears in a curved legend at the upper periphery of the field. The motto TRAVAIL ET PROGRES is inscribed on a ribbon below the shield, with the date 1896 appearing in the lower exergual area. The overall heraldic composition is bold and finely executed, consistent with the high artistic standards of Belgian pattern coinage of the late nineteenth century.
