Aanvullende informatie

Ranavalona III issued this coin just as French pressure on the Merina kingdom was becoming impossible to resist. The 1895 date places it in the final months of Madagascar's independence — French forces entered Antananarivo in September of that year, and the queen was deposed and eventually exiled to Réunion, then Algiers, where she died in 1917. Coins from this issue saw almost no meaningful circulation before the protectorate was established.

Lecompte 30 is the scarcer of the two 5-franc types, distinguished from the first by subtle differences in the legend spacing and die execution.
