| Obverse description | Right-facing bust of President Hastings Kamuzu Banda, rendered in high relief with finely detailed portrait work by engraver Paul Vincze. The effigy occupies the majority of the field, depicting the subject in a suit with close-cropped hair. The legend MALAWI arcs across the lower portion of the design in bold incuse lettering incorporated into a curved band at the truncation.
