| Reverse description | Two wildebeest (gnu) galloping in dynamic motion to the right across a grassy foreground, rendered with fine naturalistic detail by engraver Norman Sillman as part of the FAO Conservation series. The date 1978 appears in the upper field, while the denomination 5 and the legend KWACHA are positioned in two lines in the lower field beneath the animals. The overall composition emphasizes wildlife conservation, with the animals depicted mid-stride above sparse ground vegetation. A raised rim borders the entire reverse. |

| Additional information |
Malawi's 1978 conservation coinage was part of a coordinated FAO and WWF-backed program that pressured developing nations to issue collector silver during the 1970s as a fundraising mechanism tied to wildlife protection initiatives. The program produced coins across dozens of countries simultaneously, most of which saw negligible domestic circulation and were sold directly to the international collector market.
KM#15 is among the lower-mintage issues from Malawi's participation in this series.
