Malawi's 1978 conservation coinage was part of a coordinated FAO and WWF-backed program that pressured developing nations to issue collector silver during the 1970s as a fundraising mechanism tied to wildlife protection initiatives. The program produced coins across dozens of countries simultaneously, most of which saw negligible domestic circulation and were sold directly to the international collector market.

KM#15 is among the lower-mintage issues from Malawi's participation in this series.
