The "Repubblica del Nord" was a secessionist political movement in northern Italy that gained traction in the early 1990s alongside the rise of the Lega Nord party. This brass piece was produced as a propaganda token rather than an officially sanctioned currency — no such issuing authority existed in law. It circulated as a political statement during a period when the Italian state was being gutted by the Tangentopoli corruption investigations, and northern separatist sentiment was at its peak electoral pressure.
