Greece's nickel coinage of this type had been introduced in 1894 under George I, and by 1912 the country was months away from entering the First Balkan War — a conflict that would ultimately double Greek territory. Coins struck that year circulated through a nation in rapid transformation, absorbed into an economy suddenly managing newly acquired Macedonian and Aegean populations with entirely different monetary habits.
The 1912 date is the final year of issue for this type before production ceased.
